The film that made Francesco Rosi’s international reputation
5th July 1950. Salvatore Giuliano, Italy’s most wanted criminal, is shot dead in a dusty courtyard.
Who killed him and why? And who was he? The film is based on the true story of Salvatore Giuliano, an important Sicilian Mafia chieftain.
Director Francesco Rosi (1922-2015) was one of the central figures of the politicised post neo realist 1960’s and 1970's Italian cinema. Dealing with corrupt post-war Italy, Rosi’s films take on controversial issues. Salvatore Giuliano won him the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 12th Berlin International Film Festival in 1962.
At the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival thirteen of his films were screened in a section reserved for film-makers of outstanding quality and achievement. He received the honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.
In 2012 the Venice Biennale awarded Rosi the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement.
