After finishing school Lang briefly attended the Technical University of Vienna where he studied civil engineering before switching to art. In 1910 he left Vienna to see the world, travelling throughout Europe and Africa and later to Asia and the Pacific area.
At the outbreak of WWI Lang returned to Vienna and volunteered for military service with the Austrian army and fought in Russia and Romania, where he was wounded three times and lost the sight in one eye. In 1916 while recovering from his injuries and shell shock he started writing scenarios and ideas for films.
He was a man with a great cinematic vision and is still considered one of the most influential German-language film directors in the world.
