The Spacewalker (Vremya pervykh)

March 1965, and the Soviet astronaut Aleksei Leonov is caught up in the race to become the first man to walk in space.

Optimism vs cynicism, courage and determination vs technical mishaps and faulty spacesuits. This beautifully filmed account of real-life events will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Pioneering Soviet astronaut Alexei Leonov, the first man to walk in space, was a consultant in the making of this 2017 film. A talented artist, he was also the first to paint space from real life, and no detail in this film would have escaped his keen eye. This is very much his film. Leonov passed away in October 2019, having inspired generations of astronauts, writers, artists and filmmakers.

We are showing Spacewalker on the 55th anniversary of that momentous first walk in space, achieved in March 1965.

The screening is in Russian with English subtitles. Post-film discussion with refreshments provided.
