During the height of the Cold War, two ordinary families yearning for freedom secretly form an escape plan to get to the west.

From 1961 to 1988, thousands of East Germans were branded traitors by the GDR and jailed for trying to escape to the west. More than 800 men, women and children lost their lives at the border. Anyone trying to cross was met with barbed wire, landmines and spring-guns rigged to shoot if stumbled on. Anyone, that is, trying to do it on foot.

Michael Herbig's spectacular film tells the extraordinary true story of the Strelzyks and the Wetzels, whose flight from the GDR one chilly night in September 1979 was truly remarkable.
