A sober but gorgeously-drawn story - an important meditation on freedom
Summer 1998 - Kabul is under Taliban rule. Zunaira and Mohsen are young and in love. Despite the daily violence and misery, they hope for a better future. One day, a foolish gesture causes life to take an irrevocable turn.
The film is an adaptation of Yasmina Khadra’s international bestseller about life under Taliban control in the Afghan capital. The beautifully drawn animation (many scenes would have been nearly impossible to shoot as live fiction or on location) is no children's cartoon, but a hard-hitting tale of repression, injustice and chilling brutality.
